The Semi-Universal Index
On another internet in a time long long ago, there were a lot of links on this page. Many have become irrelevent or broken, but the few that remain deserve a home. This page will live on for those links.
Retitled: Interesting Links
- Neat Projects
- Putty
- PuTTY is a free SSH/telnet client for Win32. It supports scp, sftp, tunnelling and a lot more. Check it out!
- RealVNC
- VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is, in essence, a remote display system which allows you to view a computing 'desktop' environment not only on the machine where it is running, but from anywhere on the Internet and from a wide variety of machine architectures.
- Ubiquity
- Until an official release compatible with Firefox 3.6 becomes available (see blog post), here's a patched version.
- Offsite Documents
- SQL for Web Nerds
- by Philip Greenspun, this tutorial doesn't just teach SQL, it also teaches fundamentals of RDBMS design, something lacking among common college database courses. It also doesn't take 500 pages to get its point across. Read it, you'll like it!
- UNIX MAN Pages Online
- For lack of a terminal, or when you're stuck on an evil Irix system, this online set of man pages can be incredibly useful.
- Unix Programming FAQ
- Looking for help with something? You'll probably find it here.
- Onsite Documents
- vi
- An Introduction To Display Editing With vi
- My personal favorite as far as learning vi goes. Your other alternative is the O'Reilly book.
- vi Reference Card
- Once you've gotten started with vi keep this little doodad around your keyboard for quick reference.
- TeX/LaTeX
- A Gentle Introduction to TeX
- The typsetting language of the gods. A must read.
- The Not So Short LaTeX Intro
- I must admit that LaTeX is significantly more useful for mathematical documents since it has the article formatting. That doesn't mean I won't continue to use good ol' TeX for my essays and the like.
- Truly Miscellaneous
- "I've Got Nothing to Hide" and Other Misunderstandings of Privacy by Daniel J. Solove
- A great analysis (and refutation) of the "nothing to hide" argument.
- VT100 Reference Card
- This reference to all terminal specifics actually covers a whole bunch of VT terminal types. Very useful when dealing with Java telnet and related usually poorly designed software.
- Socket Programming
- A great (IMHO), quick intro to -e '.*n[iu]x' socket programming.
- Marinated Flank Steak Recipe
- A wonderfully easy and tasty recipe for flank steak. This recipe is an all-time favorite of most people who've shared a meal with me.
